Music Intensives Audition Requirements

String Intensives

Please submit video recordings of the following (piano accompaniment is strongly encouraged):

  • One movement (either first or last) of a romantic concerto
  • One three-octave scale (student's choice)

Please submit video recordings of the following (piano accompaniment is strongly encouraged):

  • One movement from a standard viola concerto, sonata, or equivalent work
  • Two movements of contrasting movements from one of Bach's unaccompanied Cello Suites

Please submit video recordings for two of the following (piano accompaniment is strongly encouraged):

  • One movement of a standard concerto
  • One movement of a Bach Suite
  • A Popper Etude (High School of Cello Playing)

Selections of contrasting style, and piano accompaniment when appropriate, are recommended. Please submit video recordings of the following:

  • Choose one movement from a piece listed in the suggested audition repertoire list, or choose a piece of comparable difficulty (no etudes or scales).
  • Choose one movement from an additional piece (no etudes or scales).

Woodwind Intensives

Please submit video recordings of the following:

  • Two works of contrasting style (consider two contrasting movements of the same work; two contrasting movements from different works; or other standard solo repertoire.) Accompaniment strongly encouraged.
  • Two contrasting orchestral excerpts of your choice.

Applicants who submit an audition for the advanced flute intensive may also be considered for the flute intensive.

Please submit video recordings featuring two contrasting works: one demonstrating lyricism and another demonstrating technique. Appropriate works include etudes, solo works, and movements from sonatas or concerti. No accompaniment necessary.

Please submit video recordings of the following:

  • Two works of contrasting style (consider movements from concerto, sonata, etude, or other solo repertoire).
  • An orchestral excerpt of your choice.

Applicants who submit an audition to the advanced oboe intensive may be considered for the oboe intensive.

Please submit video recordings featuring two contrasting works: one demonstrating lyricism and another demonstrating technique. Appropriate works include etudes, solo works, and movements from sonatas or concerti. No accompaniment necessary.

Please submit video recordings of the following:

  • Two works of contrasting style (can be two contrasting movements of the same work or two contrasting movements from different works). Accompaniment strongly encouraged.
  • Two contrasting orchestral excerpts of your choice.

Applicants who submit an audition for the advanced clarinet intensive may also be considered for the clarinet intensive.

Please submit video recordings featuring two contrasting works: one demonstrating lyricism and another demonstrating technique. Appropriate works include etudes, solo works, and movements from sonatas or concerti. No accompaniment necessary. 

Please submit video recordings of the following (piano accompaniment is strongly encouraged): 

  • Aria by Eugene Bozza (alto, with piano accompaniment)
  • Any one of the following pieces, with piano accompaniment when indicated
    • Creston – Sonata
    • Bozza – Improvisation et Caprice (any saxophone)
    • Glazunov – Concerto
    • Heiden – Sonata
    • Milhaud – Scaramouche
    • Noda – Improvisation I (soprano or alto)
    • Ibert – Concertino da Camera
    • Villa-Lobos – Fantasia (soprano or tenor)
    • J.S.Bach/Kynaston – Cello Suite No. 1 (any movement) (baritone)
  • Etude of your choice (Ferling, Berbiguier, Voxman, etc.)

Please submit video recordings of the following:

  • Two works of contrasting style (consider movements from concerto, sonata, etude, or other solo repertoire).
  • An orchestral excerpt of your choice.

Applicants who submit an audition to the advanced bassoon intensive may be considered for the bassoon intensive.

Please submit video recordings featuring two contrasting works: one demonstrating lyricism and another demonstrating technique. Appropriate works include etudes, solo works, and movements from sonatas or concerti. No accompaniment necessary.

Brass Intensives

Please submit video recordings of two contrasting solo pieces or etudes of your choice.

Please submit video recordings featuring two solo works or movements of contrasting style.

Please submit a video recording featuring a solo of your choice or two contrasting etudes.

Additional Music Intensives

Please submit video recordings of the following:

  • A single movement of a solo concert work from the Baroque, Classical/Romantic, or Modern stylistic eras.
  • An etude from the list below:
    • Leo Brouwer, 20 Estudios Sencillos
    • Mateo Carcassi, 25 Etudes, Op. 60
    • Fernando Sor, 20 Studies (Segovia edition)
    • Villa-Lobos: 12 Etudes

Please submit a video recording of two memorized classical music selections. No musical theatre pieces. Live piano accompaniment is strongly encouraged, but not required. If you are using a recorded accompaniment, please adjust volume so that your performance is clearly heard. 

Please submit video recordings of the following:

  • A substantial work of the student's choice. Example: Prelude & fugue, suite, ballade, scherzo, etc.
  • Any etude by Chopin, Moszkowski, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, or Debussy.
  • A movement from a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven.

Please submit one to three video recordings of work that best represents you as an artist at this time. If you are performing in an ensemble, please make sure you are clearly highlighted.

Please submit video recordings of the following:

Snare Drum - one solo etude or solo piece demonstrating reading ability and rolls.

Suggested repertoire for Snare Drum:  

  • Cirone - Portraits in Rhythm
  • Peters - Intermediate or Advanced Snare Drum Studies
  • Whaley - Musical Studies for the Intermediate Snare Drummer
  • Whaley - Fundamental Studies for Snare Drum
  • Aleo - Advanced Etudes

Keyboard Percussion (marimba/xylophone) - one short etude or part of a piece using 2 or 4 mallets.

Suggested repertoire for Keyboard Percussion:

  • Goldenberg - Modern School
  • Peters - Fundamental Method for Mallets
  • Gottlieb - Masterworks for Marimba
  • Whaley - Fundamental Studies for Mallets
  • McMillian - Masterpieces for Marimba
  • Whaley - Intermediate Studies for the Intermediate Mallet Player
  • Quartier - Imagine

You may also audition with passages from your repertoire in orchestra, wind ensemble, band, or marching band (front ensemble).
