Advanced String Quartet Summer Program for High School Students
Why Take Advanced String Quartet
Performing in a string quartet offers an entirely different experience than that of an orchestra—it requires additional trust, leadership, and personal accountability. During your time in the program, you'll experience the joy of learning, bonding, and performing with fellow young string musicians in your quartet, in addition to your work in the orchestra.
What You'll Learn
This program is a demanding but thrilling experience comprised of rehearsals, coachings, and performances. Your day will be spent between playing with your quartet and participating in one of our premiere large ensembles: World Youth Symphony Orchestra and/or Interlochen Philharmonic. The curriculum includes:
- Daily quartet coaching
- Daily quartet seminar
- Weekly private lessons
- Master classes with guest artists and quartets-in-residence
String Quartet Work
You will devote your time expanding your understanding of string quartet repertoire, creating a shared goal as musicians, and strengthening your own individual voices for the benefit of the group.
Students accepted into the Advanced String Quartet Program will have their own dedicated coach for daily coaching sessions. You'll learn from Interlochen's accomplished faculty and visiting guest artists in one-on-one private lessons.
Perform on stage with our artist-faculty as they lead student ensembles in large chamber music performances of standard and contemporary repertoire.
Meet the Faculty
Our summer program faculty members are conductors and string musicians in some of the most prestigious orchestras and conservatories in the world. They serve as mentors, coaches, and inspirations to our talented students and bring their real-world experience to camp every summer.

Avalon String Quartet
Cavani String Quartet
Emerson String Quartet
Pacifica String Quartet
Parker String Quartet
Turtle Island String Quartet
Each large ensemble performs multiple concerts throughout the summer. Students also have the chance to participate in numerous quartet, chamber, and solo recitals.
Throughout the program, your quartet will work together to produce a recording in our state-of-the-art recording studio at Interlochen Public Radio.
String players may also be interested in the following one-week intensives, which will be held before the Advanced String Quartet program: Cello Intensive, Viola Intensive, and Violin Intensive. Interlochen is also home to the Arts Academy boarding high school, which offers six music programs for grades 9-12.
In a string quartet, you have four different people with totally different ideas coming together and making music.
