Health Services
The safety and well-being of our students is our number one priority. We provide a robust array of services to ensure your health, safety, and well-being during your time at Interlochen.
Health Services is located in the east wing of Thor Johnson House, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our full-time staff of registered nurses treat ill and injured students, while also promoting healthy lifestyle choices. We also have a licensed nurse practitioner who holds regular office hours for treatment and referrals to local specialists.
Emergency medical services are located 1.5 miles from Interlochen’s main entrance and Munson Medical Center, a level II trauma center and referral hospital, is just a short drive away in Traverse City. Munson Medical Center has nearly 300 physicians practicing in 35 specialties.
Services
Our nurse practitioner provides a wide range of health care services including the diagnosis and management of acute, chronic, and complex health problems. Clinic hours are held on-campus for any student referred by one of the nurses, a faculty member, a parent, or the student themselves.
Interlochen offers psychological and mental health support for students through on-campus professionals as well as a partnership with telecounseling service Uwill. Counseling services are coordinated by Student Support.
For safety, all student prescriptions must be maintained in Health Services and dispensed by our nurses to students. If a student forgets to pick up their medication, a nurse will remind them.
Representatives from Elite Physical Therapy are on campus every Wednesday and Friday to evaluate and treat students. Elite PT will bill a student’s medical insurance for their services if provided a prescription. A student may obtain a prescription from a primary care provider or from Interlochen's nurse practitioner.
If a laboratory test is ordered, a nurse will obtain the necessary sample to send to Munson Medical Center for analysis. Test results will be sent to Health Services, the ordering provider, and the parent/guardian upon request.
All Arts Academy student prescription medications must be filled through Thompson Pharmacy, which delivers pre-packaged, compliance-ready medications directly to campus at no extra cost. Prescriptions can be sent by the student’s primary care provider or issued through our on-campus Provider Clinic. Thompson Pharmacy bills insurance directly, and any copays are charged to the student’s account. A $750 per semester fee will apply to medications not filled through Thompson or not provided in pre-approved blister packaging. Exceptions include injectables, rescue inhalers, emergency medications, topicals, and eye drops.
The Health Services staff assists students with appointment and transportation arrangements for all off-campus appointments.
