Interlochen Night at the Madison Symphony Orchestra

Overture Hall, the home of the Madison Symphony Orchestra

Saturday, September 23, 2023

Overture Center for the Arts, 201 State St, Madison, WI

The Madison Symphony Orchestra opens its season with the works of four American composers and multiple Interlochen connections. Music Director John Demain conducts beloved works and perennial favorites, including Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, John Adams' The Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra, and Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2, Op. 30 “Romantic". Not only did Hanson begin composing the symphony at Interlochen in 1928, but an excerpt from the first movement became the iconic “Interlochen Theme.” Interlochen Arts Camp alumnus Terrence Wilson is the featured pianist for Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, and fourteen musicians in the Madison Symphony have Interlochen connections of their own.
