Living on Campus

More than 90% of Interlochen Arts Academy students choose to live on-campus in one of our residence halls. While living away from home can be intimidating, the boarding experience offers you the opportunity to be fully immersed in our vibrant community, gain independence, and learn how to share a space with others. Here's what you can expect as a boarding student at Interlochen Arts Academy.

Residence Halls

Interlochen Arts Academy has seven residence halls. Each residence hall contains student rooms, common areas, practice rooms, and an onsite, credit card or coin-operated laundry facility. The seven residence halls are:

  • DeRoy House
  • Dow House
  • Hemingway House
  • McWhorter House
  • Mozart-Beethoven House
  • Picasso House
  • Thor Johnson House

Student Rooms

As a boarding student, you will share a modest yet comfortable room with one other student. All rooms are equipped with beds, desks, shelves, dressers, and closets or wardrobes. Depending on the hall, your room will feature either a private bathroom or one shared with the adjoining suite. View room layouts:

Supervision

All residence halls are staffed around-the-clock by a dedicated team of residence life instructors and resident hall coordinators. Residence life personnel provide structure and accountability, teach important life skills, and foster community within their assigned hall.

Residence life instructors also check students into the hall each night to ensure that all students are safe and present. Students may not leave campus without the permission of their residence life instructor and parent/guardian.

Dining

Residential students eat their meals at Stone Cafeteria. Conveniently located at the heart of Interlochen's campus, the cafeteria offers a wide variety of hot and cold food selections, including entrees, soups, a salad bar, a deli station, and a seasonal selection of fresh, locally grown produce. Gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options are available at every meal.

Stone Cafeteria

In addition to Stone Cafeteria, students can also stop by the Melody Freeze for coffee drinks, ice cream treats, grab-and-go items, and hot snacks. Additionally, many local establishments offer delivery of food, toiletries, and other essentials to campus.

The Interlochen experience is a vibrant journey of creativity and camaraderie. We offer remarkable advocacy and support for all our students, particularly for our younger 9th and 10th graders, as they pursue their interests, passions, and goals both within and beyond high school.
