Music Composition 3
Craft musical experiences using elements beyond basic melody, rhythm, and harmony.
Explore the importance of timbre, range, transition styles, and instrumentation in shaping audience perception and emotional engagement in various musical contexts, including film, video games, and concert compositions. The course begins with a focus on timbre, exploring how composers use the distinct colors of different instruments to create unique soundscapes. You'll experiment with writing your own mood-based musical passages, selecting instruments, dynamics, and articulations to evoke specific emotions.
You'll explore instrumentation and orchestration, learning how successful composers balance range, dynamics, and limitations of instruments to create cohesive and balanced compositions. By orchestrating passages for various ensembles, you'll practice balancing loudness, projection, and the blending of timbres to achieve the desired sound world.
The course then moves to musical transitions and full composition. You'll study different types of transitions—hard line, zipper, and blur—and practice identifying and applying them in your own work. The course culminates in a final project in which you'll compose a 60-measure piece, applying the skills you've developed in the course to create a well-balanced and evocative composition. By the end of the course, you'll have developed a deeper understanding of how to craft cohesive and engaging musical works that go beyond surface-level composition and create truly immersive sound worlds.
