Visual Arts Summer Program for Grades 6-8

Why Take Visual Arts

Whether you've taken formal art lessons or learned your craft on your own, this enriching camp will help you take your artistic skills from good to great. Under the guidance of expert instructors, you'll master foundational skills, discover new media, and prepare for future artistic study.

What You'll Learn

Each day, you'll work in our state-of-the-art studios developing your technique and honing your artistic voice. You'll split your time between drawing and painting and one other studio of your choice:

  • Digital Media
  • Black and White Film Photography
  • Printmaking Techniques
  • Metals
  • Ceramics

Students submit their studio preference in the Education Community after enrollment and are encouraged to do so early as space is first come, first served. Want to explore more artistic media? Enroll in both sessions.

How to Apply

This program does not require a portfolio for admission. It enrolls on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage you to apply early.

Exhibition Opportunities

At the end of your session, you'll share your work in an exhibition. The exciting opening reception features music and snacks—the perfect way to celebrate the end of a successful summer at Interlochen.

Additional Opportunities

If you've studied visual arts before and want a more focused program, apply to the Advanced Drawing & Painting program. We also offer a Fashion program for aspiring designers in grades 6-8.

Dow Center for Visual Arts

During your session, you will learn and create in the Dow Center for Visual Arts, one of the finest facilities dedicated to the study of the visual arts at the high school level. The 36,000 square-foot complex includes separate studios for drawing, painting, metalworking, ceramics, sculpture, photography, printmaking, digital arts, and fibers, as well as a gallery for student, staff, and faculty exhibitions.

A girl drawing

Interlochen aided me in learning about myself as a visual artist and gave me a wonderful chance to meet other young artists just like me.
