Students will stage the critically acclaimed musical Nov. 15, 16, 20, 21, and 22 in Harvey Theatre.
The Interlochen Arts Academy Theatre Company will present the critically acclaimed Matilda The Musical in Harvey Theatre Nov. 15, 20, 21, and 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov 16 at 2:00 p.m.
Inspired by Roald Dahl’s beloved novel, with a script by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda The Musical tells the story of a girl with extraordinary wit, imagination, and determination who dares to build a better world for herself and her peers. Called “an exhilarating story of empowerment” by The New York Times’ Ben Brantley, the musical has won 47 international awards, including five of the 13 Tony Awards for which it was nominated.
The Interlochen Arts Academy Theatre Company’s production is heartfelt, inspiring—and at times, dark. “I am very influenced by German expressionism and borrow many stylistic elements from that movement,” said Gulshirin Dubash, Director and Interlochen Theatre Arts faculty. “Its darker, theatrical quality, where the inner feelings of characters are revealed versus the reality of their situation, lends itself well to Matilda and the extreme world she’s in.”
