About Jane

Dr. Jane Carl, Professor of Clarinet at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory received her degrees from the University of Michigan principally studying with Fred Ormand. Carl has performed regularly with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra beginning with a sabbatical replacement on bass clarinet, European tours and recordings as second clarinet, and as acting assistant principal clarinet and E-flat clarinet for four years. Carl has been a member of the South Bend, Flint Symphony, and Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestras and has performed with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the Kansas City Symphony, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Carl was on the faculty of Notre Dame University, Hillsdale College, and Andrews University, and has taught at the University of Michigan. Carl is also a board member, artistic adviser, and clarinetist with Summerfest, Kansas City’s summer chamber music festival in existence for over 30 years and performs regularly with the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis. Carl presented a recital and master class in Beijing at the China International Clarinet and Saxophone Festival. In July 2008, she was the host and artistic chair of ClarinetFest, the annual conference of the International Clarinet Association, hosting 1,100 clarinetists on the campus of UMKC for five days. Carl was a concerto soloist in Porto, Portugal at ClarinetFest, and has judged competitions at ClarinetFest including the Young Artists’ Competition and the Orchestra Audition Competition. Carl is coordinator of UMKC’s Instrumental Studies Division.
