This four-week course explores fundamental concepts such as camera operation, lighting techniques, audio recording, and video editing. Over four weeks, you will gain hands-on experience and explore creative techniques to enhance your storytelling capabilities. By the end of the course, you will have produced your own polished video project.
The course begins with an exploration of camera basics, helping you understand different types of cameras and lenses, as well as technical settings like resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio. In the second week, you'll dive into lighting fundamentals, learning how to manipulate light sources to create visually compelling scenes. From there, the course explores the editing process, guiding you through organizing footage, basic editing tools, effects, and color correction. Finally, the course concludes with a focus on audio, covering microphone types, recording techniques, and audio editing to ensure high-quality sound in your final videos.
Throughout the course, you’ll participate in practical exercises and assignments designed to reinforce your learning and build confidence in your video production skills. By applying these techniques, you will not only complete a final video project but also develop a solid foundation in video production that you can build upon in future creative endeavors.

- Computer or mobile device with Internet. Internet speed must be at least 1.5Mbps download and 800Kbps upload. For students using a mobile device, download the Canvas mobile app and select “Interlochen Online” as your school.

- Video editing software, such as iMovie, Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Final Cut Pro (be sure to check the software's system requirements to ensure your device is compatible)
- Optional: Video lights — here are two recommendations:
- Inexpensive light kit that's great for beginners who need somewhere to start.
- More robust light kit with a lot more functionality.
- Optional: External microphone, such as a shotgun or lavalier microphone
