Why Study Keyboard at Interlochen

The keyboard is the bridge between centuries of musical tradition and modern innovation. At Interlochen, you'll discover the limitless potential of this versatile instrument. Experiment with different musical genres and understand how a keyboard can allow you to customize and create a wide range of sounds.

What You’ll Learn

At our boarding school for keyboard, we want you to embrace all the possibilities of the keyboard. You'll explore many genres in the contemporary music world while also selecting one of four focused tracks for in-depth study. Our combination of private lessons and ensemble work are tailor-made for your needs. With the help of our excellent faculty, you'll get comfortable playing in live groups, running rehearsals, and studying music theory. You’ll develop the presence and awareness necessary to identify technical gaps and the discipline needed to address them.

Performance Opportunities

As a keyboard student, you'll rehearse and perform regularly as a member of one of our music ensembles. Learn more in our Explore Ensembles section below. You'll also share your talents and collaborate with your peers in Performance Lab.

Recording Experience

In addition to performing, you'll also gain experience on both sides of the microphone. You'll have access to our state-of-the-art recording studios to record your works or hone your skills as a music producer.

Explore the Industry

Beyond lessons and rehearsals, you'll have the opportunity to broaden your skillset by taking classes in songwriting, recording, jazz improvisation, and other related topics.

The Music Center

Our state-of-the-art 60,000 square-foot music facility has two 3,500 square-foot rehearsal halls, two recording studios—which allow for rehearsal and performance recordings in multiple venues on campus—multiple ensemble and practice rooms, and individual faculty teaching studios. Learn more about The Music Center.

Jazz

The Interlochen Arts Academy Jazz Ensemble boasts a storied history as one of the nation's most elite high school ensembles. Members develop as soloists and ensemble performers through rehearsals and performances of jazz standards and contemporary works.
