Creative Writing Summer Program for Grades 6-9

Why Take Creative Writing

Immerse yourself in the power of the written word in this program. With the encouragement of our stellar instructors and other young writers, you'll write stories and words that soar off the page as you develop a portfolio of creative writing that you can proudly showcase.

What You'll Learn

During the session, you'll learn how to give and receive constructive feedback with other passionate young writers. All of our instructors are professional writers who are eager to help you shape your portfolio in a way that feels true to your imagination. The program includes:

  • Participating in daily writing classes that include guided reading and writing assignments
  • Discussing and critiquing your work in small class sizes
  • Taking the Creative Writing Forum, which is an opportunity to work with a broader range of instructors in a master class environment

Program Highlights

Showcase Reading

The students will participate in a showcase reading in The Writing House Great Room on the last day of the program.

Small Class Sizes

Our classes are kept small so you can get the individualized feedback you need from your instructor and really bond with other young writers.

The Writing House

Your artistic home will be the The Writing House. This comfortable space provides quiet work areas, ample seating for group projects, and a literary publications room with computer and printing stations. Take a 360-degree virtual tour.

Anthology

Students will contribute work to a print anthology that they can take home at the end of their session to remind them of a productive and inspiring summer.

Meet the Faculty

Our instructors are committed educators and accomplished artists with extensive experience in their disciplines. As mentors, they are dedicated to helping you develop your own unique voice.

I absolutely love it here at Interlochen! I really love The Writing House. I have made so, so many friends there. My favorite place to write there is the stairwell, which might sound weird, but there are almost no distractions there. I also love writing on the ledges by the windows; they're so inspiring!
