Why Take Comics & Graphic Narratives Intensive
Find your own origin story as a comics and graphic narrative artist at Interlochen this summer. During this energizing week, you'll explore the visual and narrative possibilities of one of today's most exciting genres as you inspire, create, and polish your unique storytelling abilities.
What You'll Learn
This program is open to artists with a range of experiences and backgrounds in either visual arts, graphic narratives, and creative writing. The curriculum may include:
- Learning the fundamentals of graphic novels, graphic memoirs, comic books, limited panel comics, and web comics
- Experimenting with the use of sequencing, closure, and iconography in graphic narratives
- Exploring various treatments of temporality in constructing narratives
- Working in manual and digital storytelling components
- Workshopping and critiquing student work at the end of the session
Meet the Faculty
Our outstanding faculty have extensive experience as both visual artists and narrative experts. As educators, they are thrilled to mentor young talent in a genre that is so open to originality, innovation, and creativity.
Dow Center for the Visual Arts
During your intensive, your artistic home will be the Dow Center for the Visual Arts, one of the nation's finest facilities dedicated to the study of the visual arts at the high school level. Inside the 36,000 square-foot complex you'll find separate studios for drawing, painting, metalworking, ceramics, sculpture, photography, printmaking, digital arts, and fibers, as well as a gallery for student, staff, and faculty exhibitions.
The students will participate in a reading and showcase in The Writing House Great Room on the last day of the program.
