About Er-Gene
Violinist Er-Gene Kahng is an accomplished performer, educator, and recording artist, widely recognized for her advocacy of underrepresented composers and her contributions to American classical music. A passionate teacher and mentor, she brings to Interlochen a deep commitment to artistic excellence and transformative music education.
Kahng is especially renowned for her pioneering work on composer Florence Price. Her world-premiere recordings of Price’s Violin Concertos with the Janáček Philharmonic have received international acclaim and helped catalyze a broader reassessment of Price’s place in American music history. She has also recorded the complete Handel Violin Sonatas and is a member of the contemporary chamber group Khemia Ensemble, with whom she released multiple albums championing living composers.
A dynamic chamber musician and orchestral player, Kahng has appeared in venues across North America, Europe, and Asia. She has collaborated with leading artists in both traditional and contemporary repertoire and remains an active advocate for commissioning new works.
Prior to joining the faculty at Chapman University, Kahng served as Professor of Violin and Co-Associate Chair of the Music Department at the University of Arkansas. She is a sought-after clinician and masterclass teacher, having worked with students nationwide through festivals, competitions, and residencies.
Kahng continues to inspire young musicians with a teaching philosophy rooted in curiosity, technical rigor, and a deep appreciation for diverse musical voices. At Interlochen, Kahng is excited to share her love of chamber music, orchestral playing, and solo performance while nurturing the next generation of violinists.
