Hailed by The Boston Globe for his “subtle, graceful virtuosity” and described as a “Vietnamese Guitar Virtuoso” by Austin Classical Guitar, guitarist An Tran captivates audiences with his musicality and artistry. He has performed at major venues worldwide, including the Guitar Society of Toronto, New York Classical Guitar Society, Córdoba Guitar Society, Segovia Classical Guitar Series, Harvard University, New Orleans International Guitar Festival, and Bangkok Guitar Society.
Building on the momentum of his successes, Tran signed a recording contract with Naxos and released Napoléon Coste: Guitar Works, Vol. 6 in June 2023. The American Record Guide praised his “immaculate ornaments and cultivated sense of phrasing.” His debut album, Stay, My Beloved (Frameworks/Sony Orchard), features all Vietnamese guitar music and was included in the Chicago Tribune’s “Recordings of the Year.” Classical Guitar Magazine called it “an unforgettable journey,” while Soundboard Magazine described it as “deeply moving music at its best.”
Tran has been featured on Performance Today, Classical Guitar Alive!, the Tonebase Podcast, Vietnam Airlines’ Heritage Magazine, and Vietnam Television (VTV). He has won over a dozen international competitions, including top prizes from the Berlin International Guitar Competition, New Orleans International Guitar Competition, and Society of American Musicians.
After leaving the Vietnam National Academy of Music, Tran earned his B.A. in Music from North Park University (Distinguished Young Alumni Award), his Master of Music from Yale University (Southeast Asia Studies Fellowship), and his Doctor of Musical Arts from Northwestern University (Program Honors).
He is the guitar professor at Roosevelt University, University of Illinois Chicago, and Northern Illinois University, where he established the NIU International Guitar Concert Series. He is Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Chicago Artopia, a board member of the Chicago Classical Guitar Society, and a D’Addario Artist. Tran performs on guitars by Stephan Connor.
