Stone Hotel’s newest art room features student-designed seascapes
Room 223, creatively reimagined as “Holocene” by IAA alumnus Ivy Hale, is the fourth installment in Interlochen’s art hotel room series.
Take one step into Stone Hotel’s Room 223, and you’re swept into a world of water. Vibrant blue-toned wall murals depict soaring mountains and glaciers dripping into ocean depths. Opposing walls showcase layers of green and blue lined with black. Rock-inspired pillows fill the bed, and a graceful stained glass lamp completes the room.
Titled “Holocene” as a reference to the current geological epoch, Room 223 reflects the skill and dedication of Ivy Hale, an Arts Academy alumnus from San Francisco, California. Hale was a visual arts major during his time at Interlochen, and his work is the latest in a series of similar rooms at Stone.
Interlochen’s art hotel rooms project began in 2022 as a collaboration between Stone Hotel, Interlochen’s Maintenance department, and Visual Arts at Interlochen Arts Academy. The project was developed with an eye to the global phenomenon of art hotels, which feature creative installations in each room. The goal is to create multiple art hotel rooms over the next few years, each one designed by a different Arts Academy student.
“Room 223 immerses the viewer in a world of icy beauty,” says Camille Colatosti, Provost at Interlochen Center for the Arts. “Hale’s work evokes the human delight in exploration and our deep-felt connections to the natural world. In cooperation with the Maintenance department and staff at Stone Hotel, it’s our delight to foster opportunities like these, allowing Academy students to see their creativity impact the real world.”
