Solti Award winner and Interlochen alumnus Cristian Măcelaru to conduct World Youth Symphony Orchestra on July 9

The orchestra will be joined by Grammy Award-nominated guest violinist Philippe Quint.

On Sunday, July 9, Cristian Măcelaru will conduct the World Youth Symphony Orchestra (WYSO) as they perform Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor and Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C Minor. Hailing from Timișoara, Romania, Măcelaru is Music Director of the Orchestre National de France as well as WYSO’s Artistic Director and Principal Conductor.  He is an alumnus of both Interlochen Arts Academy (97-99) and Interlochen Arts Camp (98).

After Interlochen, Măcelaru studied at the University of Miami in Florida and at Rice University in Houston. He quickly rose to prominence in the conducting world, winning the Solti Emerging Conductor Award in 2012, followed in 2014 by the Solti Conducting Award. He has conducted the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra, and Philadelphia Orchestra.

Măcelaru and WYSO will be joined by Grammy Award-nominated guest violinist Philippe Quint, hailed by BBC Music Magazine as “truly phenomenal.”
