In Memoriam: August 2022

We are deeply saddened to share that longtime World Youth Symphony Orchestra guest conductor Larry Rachleff (UNIV Fac 84-87, IAC Fac 88-92, 94, 98-99) passed away on Aug. 8, 2022. A member of the American Classical Music Hall of Fame, Rachleff served on the faculty of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University for three decades and spent 21 years as the music director of the Rhode Island Philharmonic. “[Larry] would talk for hours with [students] over lunch and dinner and would speak with them after the concerts and tell them how they had played,” said J Berry, Assistant Director of Instrument Services and Music Operations at Interlochen. “Campers knew that he cared about them as people and as artists.”

Bonnie Margolis (IAC/NMC 64-68, IAA 67-70) of Colombia, Missouri, passed away on Aug. 14, 2022. After serving as class president for the Academy class of 1970, Margolis went on to study at the University of Michigan. A passionate student and teacher of history, Margolis remained closely connected to Interlochen, returning to Interlochen’s campus from 2011-2014 to welcome visitors and conduct tours at the Information Booth.
