Update: Road Construction Near Interlochen

Road crews are targeting a June 2 or 3 traffic shift.

  • Southbound into Interlochen Corners should detour to Gonder or 633 (depending on starting point and/or preference).
  • Eastbound towards Interlochen Corners should take Gonder Road (to Riley).
  • Westbound towards Interlochen Corners should take 633 to Youker.
  • Traffic coming from the south is unaffected.

So what’s changed for people who have been accessing campus during the earlier stages of construction?

  • You will no longer be able to enter Interlochen corners from the South (Northbound) and turn West.
  • Westbound traffic coming toward Interlochen corners will not be able to turn South (towards campus).
  • Bottom line, no access to J Maddy via Interlochen Corners whatsoever for this next phase.

April 2026 Update

Stage 1 road construction map for spring 2026 in Interlochen

The project will rebuild nearly eight miles of highway from Sullivan Road to Reynolds Road, with improvements that include additional turn lanes, wider shoulders, rumble strips, and a new roundabout at the intersection of South Long Lake Road and J. Maddy Parkway. Work is expected to continue through November.

The first traffic change affecting Interlochen will occur at the start of construction in April.

Road construction is scheduled to begin April 15 (but could launch sooner if weather allows). During this time:

  • Southbound US-31 traffic will be maintained on US-31.
  • Northbound US-31 traffic will be detoured on Gonder Road, Riley Road, J. Maddy Parkway, Youker Road, and County Road 633.
  • J. Maddy Parkway access to US-31 will be closed for up to two weeks in April while crews build temporary lanes around the roundabout.
  • South Long Lake Road access to US-31 will be closed through June, with traffic detouring on West Silver Lake Road and Secor Road.

Additional traffic adjustments will occur later in the construction season, and Interlochen will share updates as new phases begin. For the latest information and detour details, please check out VisitInterlochen.com.
