Renaissance Music Retreat

Why Attend Renaissance Music Retreat

Join us for the 2024 Renaissance Music Retreat where you'll focus on Ferrara, the city of d'Este family grandeur. You'll learn music by Ferrarese nuns, Leonora d'Este, and Rafalla Aleotti and will delve into consort music commissioned by Este, Gonzaga, and Borgia women. In Renaissance Ferrara, women and girls performed, composed, and commissioned music for sacred and secular occasions. Join us in as we explore Italian Renaissance music written or commissioned by women.

The Renaissance Music Retreat welcomes players of recorders, early winds (cornetto, shawm, dulcian, sackbut, crumhorn), violins (with Baroque/Renaissance bow), viols, lutes, Renaissance harp, harpsichord, and percussion. There will be opportunities for vocalists as well.

Participants must have the ability to read music. If you are an instrumentalist, please bring your own instrument(s). Instrumentalists must have proficiency on at least one period instrument. The course will be held at A=440. Some instruments are available to borrow during the workshop with advanced communication with the instructor. Printed music will be provided.
