Ziqing Guan, D.M.A.
About Ziqing
Ziqing Guan earned her D.M.A. in 2023 at the University of South Carolina. She is originally from Guangzhou, China. Guan has been a prize winner and finalist in several competitions, including the Byron Hester Competition, the San Diego Flute Guild Young Artist Competition, the Mid-South Flute Society Young Artist Competition, the Flute Society of Kentucky Young Artist Competition, the South Carolina Flute Society Young Artist Competition, the Greater Philadelphia Flute Society Young Artist Competition, and the Southern China Solo & Ensemble Invitational Competition. In addition, she was a quarterfinalist in the 2022 NFA Young Artist Competition. Her principal teachers include Dr. Jennifer Parker-Harley, Dr. Adah Jones, and Professor Qi Yan.
Equally adept as a solo recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral player, Guan has appeared in concerts at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention, Georgia College & State University, and Musicartissimo Flute Master Class and Recital in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. She has played with the Long Bay Symphony, Spartanburg Philharmonics, Aiken Symphony, and Rock Hill Symphony in South Carolina.
Outside of music, Guan was certified by the American Council on Exercise as a personal trainer in 2021. Her doctoral research combines her passion for flute-playing and exercise; her D.M.A. document is Injury Prevention Exercise Guidelines for Flutists. In it, she explores the relationship between strength training and injury prevention. She offers a detailed exercise plan and a practice plan incorporating stretching and strength-building for flutists who suffer PRMDs (playing-related musculoskeletal disorders) and those who wish to prevent these common playing-related injuries. Guan has presented workshops and classes on this topic to the South Carolina Flute Society Festival, Haynes Health & Wellness Summit, and the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention. She founded Musician Wellness Studio in 2023 to support musicians in developing a balanced practice regimen that enhances their physical and mental well-being.
