Tor Campbell is the Program Director of Musical Theatre at Interlochen Center for the Arts, where he mentors the next generation of artists while fostering artistic excellence, collaboration, and empathy. An award-winning director, choreographer, movement director, educator, and producer, Campbell has created work at leading regional theatres, universities, and international venues.

Most recently, Campbell served as Choreographer for A Christmas Carol and Associate Director & Movement Director for Covenant at Goodman Theatre. His additional Goodman credits include The Color Purple (Associate Director), Fat Ham (Associate Director), Book Up! (Co-Director), and A Christmas Carol (Associate Director, 2024; Assistant Director, 2022). His directing and choreography credits also include The Wizard of Oz, The Little Mermaid, Hairspray, Godspell, Disaster!, The Prom, Anastasia, Dreamgirls, and Beauty and the Beast, with artistic work spanning Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Northlight Theatre, Writers Theatre, and other regional and educational institutions. Before returning to regional theatre and higher education, Campbell spent seven years in Macau, where he helped launch entertainment productions at The Venetian and Sands resorts while leading more than 500 performers.

A passionate educator, Campbell has taught at Northwestern University, Lake Forest College, UC Irvine, The Juilliard School’s summer programs, and through Goodman Theatre’s Education and Engagement programs. His teaching emphasizes artistic rigor, authentic storytelling, and the development of collaborative leaders.

Campbell holds an MFA in Directing from Northwestern University and a BA in Communications with a minor in Theatre from Marymount Manhattan College. He believes theatre has the power to entertain, deepen empathy, and inspire meaningful change.

I believe the purpose of theatre is not to escape humanity, it is to rehearse it. Every rehearsal is a chance to practice empathy before conflict, courage before fear, generosity before success, and compassion before it is tested. If my students leave my classroom more fully human than when they entered it, then I have succeeded. The art will take care of itself. Theatre isn’t the destination. Humanity is.
