Tim Powers

About Tim

Tim Powers was born in Detroit, 1962. He currently lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He studied communication design at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit where he received his B.F.A. in 1986. Powers received his M.F.A. from the Art Institute of Boston in 2011 with a focus in object making.

He worked in the design industry for 30 years during which time he received several awards from the AAF including a national gold Addy Award for his design of the Merrell Footwear tradeshow exhibit. His design work has appeared in HOW magazine and Print Magazine.

Powers is a member of the AIGA and has worked locally with the student chapters of this organization. He has work as a design educator at Ferris State University and Grand Valley State University. He maintains a design practice as well as a sculptural/drawing studio practice in addition to his work as an educator. Powers is currently a Professor in the Design Program at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan.

His work has been shown at The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, Ferris State University, Kendall College of Art and Design, Muskegon Art Museum, UICA/Grand Rapids, Whitdel Arts/Detroit, The Grand Rapids Art Museum, Lowell Center for the Arts, The Scarab Club/Detroit, and The College for Creative Studies/Detroit.

Powers has traveled for advanced studies in Aspen, New York, Rome, Paris, Egypt, Netherlands, and Oxford England.
