About Sheila

Assistant Principal Bass of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra 1977-2017, Sheila Garrett is an active freelance musician and educator in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She has over 40 years of professional orchestral experience in a wide variety of genres. Sheila has collaborated in performances of virtually all the standard bass chamber repertoire. Together with her husband Charles, former Principal Bass of the Calgary Philharmonic, she has been a recitalist at the conventions of Bassworks and the International Society of Bassists. Distinguished Instructor at Mount Royal University Conservatory, she is also Artistic Facilitator of the double bass division of its Academy for Young Artists program and an in demand clinician. Her students excel in competitions and have earned scholarships to prestigious post secondary schools and summer programs. Eleven of her students have been members of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, a full scholarship institution. Professionally her students hold positions in orchestras in Canada, Europe, and the United States.
