Katie Wibby
About Katie
Katie Wibby joined the Interlochen faculty in 2002 after beginning her teaching career at St. Louis (Michigan) High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Alma College, where she was active in the Alma College Dance Company and directed the Chemistry Club outreach program. She later completed her Master's degree in Educational Technology from Michigan State University.
Wibby is passionate about integrating arts, technology, and environmental issues into her chemistry classes, creating engaging, real-world learning experiences for her students. Her innovative interdisciplinary projects include: a collaborative project with biology classes on soil chemistry and shoreline erosion; a collaborative project with music theory students exploring the science behind the Dr. Atomic opera; air pollution monitoring and reporting via ArcGIS; and the creation and editing of yearly student-produced lab safety videos.
Since joining Interlochen, Wibby has remained committed to professional development, attending and presenting at conferences related to chemistry, technology, and educational theories, including ChemEd, WiredTC, ISACS, and the Project Zero Institute at Harvard. She currently serves on the board of the National Mole Day Foundation, promoting chemistry education in high schools through the celebration of Mole Day in October.
Wibby's excellence in education was recognized early in her career when she was named an Alma College Harlan R. McCall Scholar for excellence in student teaching.
I believe that all students can use science to understand the world around us. My classes focus on learning from discussions, asking questions, and observation during experiments and demonstrations.
