About Johnston

Johnston M. Mitchell is the recipient of three artist-in-residence writing awards from the State of Michigan’s Arts & Cultural Affairs program. Mitchell writes non-fiction, and especially enjoys lexical repetition poetry.

His writings are driven by experiences of living abroad for over a decade, where he worked in journalism and media while based in Paris, and as a program officer and consultant in free and independent media development as part of the greater democratization and governance era in post-communist Central and Eastern Europe.

Mitchell believes that where you’ve been and what you’ve lived can best drive your writing. It offers everyone their own unique platform. Seeking truth through writing drives his practice and teaching, and it has been derived from his academic studies and professional tenures involving the U.S. First Amendment and its umbrella of freedom of expression.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Behavioral Communications from Valparaiso University, and a Master's in Media Management from The University of Georgia.
