About Cassandra

Cassandra Anouthay currently teaches humanities at Interlochen Arts Academy. Before Interlochen, she taught English at Benzie Central High School, another local high school, and Harbor Lights Middle School back in her hometown of Holland, Michigan. She graduated from Aquinas College with a Bachelor of Arts for English. Anouthay also studied English as a Second Language and Spanish. In her time at Aquinas, she organized and contributed to the Sampler, an annual publication showcasing Aquinas students' writing and art. One of Anouthay's poems went on to receive an Academy of American Poets Prize. Since then, two of her poems have been published in an anthology called Michigan's Best Emerging Poets. Anouthay loves sharing and encouraging this love for reading and writing with her students every day.

One of my main goals as a teacher is to teach students to find a little bit of themselves in the readings we study in class or, as author Jason Reynolds puts it, 'see themselves on a page.' Students retain and take away more from the learning experience when they can make a connection to what they already know, even with new, challenging content.

  • Certifications: Secondary English, English as a Second Language
