Audition Checklist: How to Ace Your Next Musical Theatre Audition
Tips from a Broadway actor to successfully showcase your skills as a performer.

Before the Audition
Auditions aren’t just about showing off your talent—they’re about showing you’re ready to take on a role, both artistically and professionally. But nailing the audition starts before you even walk in the room. Here’s how to lay the groundwork:
Know your song inside and out. Prepare and memorize the musical, technical, and emotional elements of a song so fully that they become second nature. That way, during your performance, all you have to concentrate on is embodying the meaning.
Dig into the lyrics. What is each line really saying? What’s being left unsaid? Imagine how your character feels in each moment, and let that guide your interpretation for an emotionally authentic and believable character portrayal.
Rehearse all aspects of your performance. Preparation builds confidence and leads to inspired performances. Memorize your audition piece and you’ll stay present and fully engrossed in your performance.
At the Audition
As much as you need to prepare your song, you also need to demonstrate in your audition that you are prepared to be a cooperative and respectful team member that people will want to work with during the many long, sometimes tiring, and often stressful rehearsals that lead to opening night. Remember: Be more than just a great actor; be a great colleague, partner, and team member.
Your audition begins the minute you enter the room—even before you say your first word or sing your first note. Walk in happy to be there, bright and professional.
Be yourself. Introduce yourself to your auditors and the accompanist.
Come with music prepared. Provide the music to the accompanist, clearly marked with key signatures, tempo markings, and any other key points highlighted. Prep them if there is anything specific that you do in your performance that will need their attention.
Dress appropriately. Dress in a way that is character specific or that is professional and makes you feel good. Appropriate clothing sends a message that your behavior will be professional in rehearsal and on stage.
Be open to feedback. When your auditor gives you direction, incorporate it. They want to see that you are flexible and can take direction.
Don’t make excuses. No need to explain or defend your acting choices. Listen to the director’s take on the character or situation, and then try it.
Have a character conversation. It’s ok to discuss your character with the director and adjust your work accordingly.
Do not apologize before, during, or after your performance, no matter what the reason. The only reaction you should have after your performance is gratitude and a good balance of humility and confidence.
Start again if you need to. If you or the accompanist fumbles, it’s OK to stop, gently and kindly talk to the accompanist, and start again. However, you can only do that so many times . . .
Have a selection of songs at the ready, in case you are asked for it.
Be kind. Thank your accompanist, no matter what you think of how they played. Their role is invaluable to your audition.
After the Audition
After the audition, remain hopeful! You may get the part. But if you don’t, don’t beat yourself up. Instead, turn it around. Think through what you did well and what needs improvement, then use these observations to continue to do even better, every time.
