Mike Delp (IAA Fac 84-11, IAC St 12-14), retired instructor of creative writing, and Crispin Campbell (IAA Fac 80-18, IAC Fac 85, 87-88, 91-93, 95-96, 04, 11-19, 21-22), retired instructor of cello, presented "The Mad Angler Meets the Mad Cellist" on June 12 at Iron Fish Distillery in Thompsonville, Michigan, featuring selections from Delp's "Mad Angler" poems and Campbell’s cello improvisations. To celebrate their fifth-year anniversary, Iron Fish Distillery used the "Mad Angler" poems as inspiration for their limited release estate whiskey of the same name.
Kara Huber (IAA 04-06, IAC St 06), award-winning pianist and conductor, has been appointed Instructor of Piano at Interlochen Arts Academy. She will begin her new role on August 22. Huber studied at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music with Awadagin Pratt and the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music with John Perry and Leon Fleisher. She recently completed a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano and Conducting at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and served on the faculty of the University of Louisville School of Music.
Bassoonist Thalia Navas (IAC 17) and harpist Juan Manuel Riveros (IAC 15, IAA 15-17) were recognized as Most Outstanding Instrumentalists in the Sphinx Orchestral Partners Auditions (SOPA) Excerpt Competition on May 24 at the New World Center in Miami, Florida. Navas and Riveros earned top prizes in their instruments among a field of 135 competitors in 15 instrument categories. Navas recently graduated with her Bachelor of Music in Bassoon Performance from The Juilliard School. Riveros is a harpist, teacher, and music theorist, who recently completed his Master of Music in Harp Performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Yolanda Kondonassis (IAA 78-82). He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in music theory at the University of Michigan.
Isabel Cárdenes (IAC 18-19) completed her first semester at Manhattan School of Music pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Harp. On the recommendation of Nancy Allen (AS 59, IAC/NMC 60), Principal Harp of the New York Philharmonic, Cárdenes performed with the Harrisburg Symphony in their April 10 presentation of Korngold’s Violin Concerto with solist Bella Hristova. Cárdenes will join her instructor Mariko Anraku, Manhattan School of Music faculty and acting Principal Harp of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra’s performance of Wagner's Die Walküre on June 15 in Carnegie Hall.
