Orchestral Conducting Institute

Orchestral Conducting Institute

Join award-winning conductor Dr. Carolyn Watson for an intensive week of conducting, score study, master classes, and rehearsals—culminating in a participant-led performance at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Immerse yourself in the study of orchestral conducting on Interlochen’s beautiful, historic campus in northern Michigan. Experience ample podium time with a selected repertoire that will include a variety of works from the standard canon widely in the public domain—any non-public domain scores will be provided. See the Schedule tab below for an outline of daily activities.

The Institute ensemble includes course conductors and auditors on their respective instruments, alongside additional professional musicians from Interlochen Center for the Arts and the greater Grand Traverse area. Registrants should be experienced musicians (educators, community ensemble conductors, university music students, etc.) and able to lead an ensemble. Conductors will conduct in daily master classes, experience daily podium time, receive feedback on gesture and rehearsal techniques, and conduct rehearsals with the Institute ensemble.
