On Sunday, Feb. 17, Interlochen Arts Academy Instructor of Piano Dr. Michael Coonrod joined the Traverse Symphony Orchestra for the world premiere of a new piano concerto.

The piece, Kenji Bunch’s “Concerto for Piano, Left Hand,” was commissioned for Coonrod in 2014 and completed in the fall of 2018. Coonrod’s friends, colleagues, and former students collected funds for the piece after Coonrod suffered a career-threatening injury to his right hand in the summer of 2014. Before the performance, Coonrod visited Interlochen Public Radio to co-host Music at Midday. During the segment, Coonrod discussed "Concerto for Piano, Left Hand," his career at Interlochen Arts Academy, and some of his favorite works for piano.
