About Dane

Dane Philipsen is an oboist and teacher who is passionate about honoring the traditions, techniques, and musical expression of the American school of oboe playing while allowing space for the evolution of the style through innovation, refinement, and creativity. Among his students and colleagues alike, Philipsen recognizes a shared pursuit of rich, resonant tone and the ability to shape singing musical lines.

As a musician, Philipsen is process-oriented and enjoys exploring both the oboe’s canon of repertoire as well as less well-known works. In the teaching studio, he empowers his students with the same curiosity and process, allowing them to develop their own repertoire and voice in ways that are meaningful to them as artists and advocates. Philipsen's students benefit from the experience he has gained as an orchestral musician, both on stage and in the pit; his varied perspectives inform their technical and musical preparation.

As an orchestral musician, Philipsen is currently engaged as the principal oboist of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra in northern Michigan. As the principal oboist of the Atlanta Opera, he was recognized as the company’s “sweet-toned oboist.” He has maintained guest oboe and English horn affiliations with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Iowa, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and others. As a soloist and collaborator, Philipsen regularly presents recitals and master classes that explore the repertoire for oboe alone, with piano, and within chamber ensembles.
