Poetry Workshop with Holly Wren Spaulding

Why Take Poetry Workshop

Modern life constantly takes us out of the present moment. We are overwhelmed, worried about the future, and pulled in too many directions. Poetry can return us to the present, allowing us to express ourselves in creative ways. Through demonstrations, discussion, generative exercises, and short craft lectures, this poetry workshop will inspire you to work with language in ways that feel enlivening, fresh, and accessible. All writing levels are welcome.

We'll explore poems by Frank O'Hara, Basho, Harryette Mullen, Joseph Stroud, Mary Oliver, and others, and then try our hand at free verse poems that are sensory, elemental, and attuned to the complex and ultimately precious multi-dimensionality of our world.

The goal of the workshop is not only to strengthen and nurture your creative expression but remind you how good it feels to make art, however humble, in response to our lived experience.
