David Montee wins statewide theatre award

David Montee, longtime instructor of theatre at Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp, was awarded the Oscar Wilde Award for Best Shakespeare Actor on Aug. 30.

The Oscar Wilde Awards are presented annually by the Encore Michigan Theatre Critics and honor excellence in professional theatre in the state of Michigan. Montee was nominated in two categories: Best Actor in a Play for The Odd Couple at the Purple Rose Theatre and Best Shakespeare Actor for As You Like It at the Interlochen Shakespeare Festival. Montee joined the theatre faculty at Interlochen in 1988; he was appointed director of the Arts Academy Theatre Division in 1990 and director of the Arts Camp Theatre Division in 1999. In 2011, Montee stepped down from his role as director of both divisions to spend more time working with students and pursuing his own artistic interests. He continues to teach in the theatre department at Interlochen Arts Academy.

Although several Interlochen Shakespeare Festival performances and actors have been nominated for Wilde Awards, Montee is the first to receive an award. Please join us in congratulating David Montee on the 2015-16 Oscar Wilde Award for Best Shakespeare Actor!
