Academy student Molly Monahan named one of the nation’s best young composers

Interlochen Arts Academy senior Molly Monahan has been recognized by the American Composers Forum (ACF) as one of the nation’s six best young composers in the 2016 NextNotes High School Composition Awards. The ACF, in partnership with MakeMusic, uses NextNotes to identify and recognize the year’s best composers across all genres.

Understanding that these young musicians have educators that help them craft their voices and grow as young artists and citizens, the ACF invites their recipients to thoughtfully consider and nominate an instructor or mentor that has been influential in their journey as an artist. Monahan used the opportunity to acknowledge Interlochen Arts Academy Instructor of Music Composition and Music Theory Dr. Cynthia Van Maanen.

In her nomination letter, Monahan spoke of Dr. Van Maanen as someone who has “... taught me not only how to compose, but also how to be a composer.” Monahan added, “[Dr. Van Maanen] has helped me and countless others more than I can ever know, and there’s nobody I can think of that would be more fit for this award.”

Congratulations to Molly Monahan and to Dr. Cynthia Van Mannen on their success and recognition.
