About Russ

Russ Orlando was born in Detroit, Michigan. He earned a B.F.A. at Wayne State University, and M.F.A. in Ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art. He was awarded the Kresge Artist Fellowship in 2009. His exhibitions include the Ceramic Artist Exchange Tandem, Neumunster, Germany; Northern Clay Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and the Detroit Institute of Arts. He has been a visiting artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Tennessee, and an instructor at Wayne State University and the University of Michigan-Flint.

I encourage my students to focus on critical thinking and the importance of using their life experience in their work. I also urge my students to become their own best critics and help them to recognize their work’s relevance in today world.
