Chris VanWyck

Instructor of Media

About Christopher

Described by his oldest daughter as “10-feet tall and made out of old truck parts.”, Chris has spent the last 30 years as a national award-winning graphic designer, fine artist, design educator and passionate community advocate.

His creative process can be described in three simple steps; Engage (make me look), Educate (make me learn) and Empower (make me act). Believing that the most important question an artist can ask themselves is “Why?”, Chris strives to make an impact with his design through purposeful visual communication, across all media platforms.

He earned his BFA in Studio Art from Michigan State University, with an emphasis in Graphic Design, and went on to teach in the MSU art department for 15 years as an Adjunct Professor of Design.

A 30-year veteran of the Midwest design scene, he currently owns and operates Engine Creative LLC, a full-service graphic design studio.

My creative process and teaching philosophy mirror each other and can be summed up in three simple steps; Engage (make me look), Educate (make me learn) and Empower (make me act). The most important question an artist can ask themselves is “Why?” This simple question infuses purpose into all creative output. I strive to enlighten all that I come into contact with and unlock their true potential as artists.

I've been very fortunate to have been awarded many design and advertising awards over the past 30+ years. Way too many to list and who likes a braggart anyway?

Two of my proudest moments:

  • Gold National Addy Award for Corporate Logo Identity. Top award in the nation.
  • GUVVY Award for Business Supporting Arts and Culture. Top award in the state for community support.
