Mission, Purpose, and Values
Everything we do at Interlochen is driven by our mission, purpose, and values.
In July 2003, we adopted our current mission statement: Interlochen Center for the Arts engages and inspires people worldwide through excellence in educational, artistic, and cultural programs, enhancing the quality of life through the universal language of the arts.
Our mission is inspired by the phrase that was inscribed on the back of Kresge Auditorium in 1948:
Dedicated to the Promotion of World Friendship through the Universal Language of the Arts
Our mission is more than a pretty phrase. We are dedicated to creating a place where art—and people—of all kinds are celebrated and shared.
Purpose and Values
Our core purpose, to ignite a lifelong passion for the arts, is supported by five key values.
We hope that everyone—from our youngest junior camper to our oldest concert patron—leaves our campus renewed and energized by our world-class programming and vibrant creative atmosphere.
We seek to cultivate the unique creative talents of every student who sets foot on our campus and to prepare them to live lives of lasting confidence.
Every Interlochen experience—from adult classes to guest artist performances—is carefully curated to create a meaningful, lasting memory. Every student and patron should leave our campus not just inspired, but transformed.
Each day at Interlochen, dozens of “aha!” moments happen. We help students break down internalized boundaries, master techniques, and discover the path to a purposeful life in the arts and beyond.
Even our most mature alumni still remember the lessons they learned at Interlochen; the feel of their corduroy knickers; the sounds of “Les Preludes.” We want everyone who encounters Interlochen to remember this experience for their lifetime.
Culture of Diversity
At Interlochen, we believe the arts are the bridge that spans borders, boundaries, and beliefs. Since our earliest days, we have warmly welcomed students, staff, and visitors from across the street and around the globe.
In 2007, our Board of Trustees founded our first Diversity and Inclusion Task Force to ensure that people of all races, ages, genders, sexual orientations, physical abilities, and nationalities are accepted at Interlochen. A second task force was founded in 2017 to continue and expand this important work.
Today, we are actively working towards the goal of a more representative and inclusive Interlochen. Partnerships with youth arts education organizations across the nation have enabled us to bring more gifted young artists from underrepresented communities to Interlochen. Comprehensive diversity, equity, and inclusion training is now a key component of both our student curriculum and our employee training. Our artistic faculty are leading efforts to diversify the works of art created and performed in our classrooms and recital halls.
We are deeply passionate about building a community in which every voice can be heard. If you are too, you belong at Interlochen.
