Over the past eight years, the summer camp institute programs have grown steadily, attracting well over 300 students in the summer of 2013. The one-week programs offer experiences that complement the traditional camp experience, but students can take the institutes as a stand-alone program if they choose.
For musicians, the institutes are an opportunity to spend a week focused solely on their own instrument, attending master classes, learning and refining repertoire and networking with instructors from leading college and conservatory programs. Originally available for only a few instruments, fourteen music institutes were offered in the summer of 2013.
Institutes are also available for theatre, dance, and visual arts. In each of these areas, the intense programs are focused on helping high school students plan and prepare for college auditions and portfolio reviews.
In each of the disciplines, the institutes have provided students with a small glimpse of the artistic and creative energy that exists at Interlochen throughout the year.
