More than just an audition, each student's session will include time to actually work with the dance faculty. "We will give a ballet class, offer pointe work and some contemporary movement as well," says Interlochen's director of dance Cameron Basden. "We look for enthusiasm, a willingness and determination to learn and a hunger for information. Curiosity and passion are the twin driving forces behind success in dance. For preparation, a student should bring their knowledge and skill of dance and a bit of research as to why they want to be a part of Interlochen is always helpful."
Shouldering the majority of the dance department's travel load will be Nicola Conraths, instructor of dance at Interlochen and scholar and resource panelist for the Singapore School of the Arts (SOTA). Conraths is a Ph.D. candidate in performing arts at Brunel University in London, and holds master's degrees in communication and theatre arts. She attended the Rome Ballet School with Franca Bartolomei and Paola Iorio and graduated with a diploma in dance from the London Studio Center. Nicola also trained at the Royal Ballet School, The Place and Ballet Rambert and performed with London City Ballet, Ballet Portugal and the Jiving Lindy Hoppers.
Conraths will be the primary faculty member representing the dance department in New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., Portland, Denver, San Francisco, Seattle, Austin and Atlanta. Basden will lead auditions in Chicago, Detroit and Ann Arbor, while Justin Koertgen will be in Cincinnati and Grand Rapids.
"I want to see students who exhibit a passion for what they do and a desire to learn more in dance, and in life," says Basden when asked about what impresses her most during a rehearsal.
