Interlochen Center for the Arts’ Instructor of Singer-Songwriting Courtney Kaiser-Sandler and Director of Motion Picture Arts Michael Mittelstaedt have been invited to present at the 2019 SXSW EDU conference in Austin, Texas.

Kaiser-Sandler and Mittelstaedt are scheduled to lead two sessions during their trip: “Sharing Your Identity Through Artistic Expression” and “Spark Creative Access Through Personal Identity.”

The SXSW EDU Conference & Festival is designed to cultivate and empower disparate communities to advance teaching and learning techniques, and exists as a component of the South by Southwest family of events. The annual conference includes open and engaging sessions, immersive workshops, interactive learning experiences, film screenings, early-stage startups, and business opportunities and networking.

In the first session, “Spark Creative Access Through Personal Identity”, Kaiser-Sandler and Mittelstaedt will model techniques and activities that can be utilized by teachers facilitating student exploration of who they are within the medium of the arts. These hands-on tools exist within their respective curriculums, and offer cross-discipline methods to aid students in exploring and strengthening their personal identities and how it relates artistic medium.

“Sharing Your Identity Through Artistic Expression” is a longer session, and includes a live performance by Interlochen students with the students sharing their personal identity work, along with an open conversation around the topics of citizen artistry, creating topical and relevant work, and an in-depth demonstration of the aforementioned tools.

In 2018, Kaiser-Sandler was joined by students from Interlochen Arts Academy for her SXSW EDU presentation titled “Taking the Inside Out,” which included live performance elements along with a presentation on the importance of touring with students off campus in order to enhance teaching, assess students, and in turn give students performance experience with a real audience.
