Interlochen alumni compete in amateur Van Cliburn competition

Update: June 21, 2016 - Congratulations to Brad Dunn and Lana Marina for advancing to the quarterfinals.

The legacy of longtime friend of Interlochen Van Cliburn lives on more than three years after his passing. One such outlet for celebration includes the upcoming Seventh Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. Since 1999, this competition offers non-professional pianists ages 35 and over a chance to showcase their love of classical music and a chance to walk away with a $2,000 cash prize.

This year, three Interlochen alumni will take the stage during the competition June 19-25: James Carter Cathcart (IAA 68-71), Brad Dunn (IAC/NMC 86) and Lana Marina (IAC/NMC 83).

As our three alumni demonstrate, many of the past contestants and winners of the Amateur Competition are not unfamiliar to arts education and training. In fact, at the age of 14 Marina won the Interlochen Arts Camp Van Cliburn scholarship, and earned the chance to meet Cliburn during a ceremony that summer.

For those interested, all performances will be webcast live starting June 19 at cliburn.org. You can also follow along on social media using #CliburnAmateur. Lastly, those who want to support their favorite competitor may do so by voting once a day for any still-active participant via cliburn.org.

Best of luck to our three alumni and to all those competing this weekend.
