Winds and Percussion Summer Program for Grades 6-9

Develop your skills as a musician and as an ensemble player in the winds and percussion summer program. You will increase your musical awareness and challenge your technical proficiency through valuable ensemble experiences.

Age range: Grades 6-9

A faculty of professional musicians and experienced educators will guide you through age- and skill-appropriate repertoire to help promote your musical development. Your days will be divided between practice time, classes, and rehearsals and with the Intermediate Wind Symphony. With the wind symphony, you will perform two public concerts during the three-week session. Advanced students will also join the Intermediate Symphony Orchestra.

Program Details (for students in Wind Symphony only):

  • You will have daily rehearsals, including two sectionals per week.
  • Performance skills class is held for one period each day. In this class you will cover practical topics and participate in interactive discussion, enhanced through master classes and chamber ensemble sessions.
  • You will receive weekly private lessons with a member of our distinguished faculty, and dedicated practice times with the guidance of teaching assistants on days when no lesson is scheduled.
  • You can further round out your experience with two additional elective classes. Choose electives from the music department, or take the opportunity to explore another art form (see elective options).

Program Details (for students in Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra):

  • You will rehearse with the Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra daily. Each ensemble also has weekly sectionals.
  • You will have weekly private lessons with a member of our distinguished faculty, and dedicated practice time with the guidance of teaching assistants on lesson off-days.
  • You will have the opportunity to take one additional elective, either in music or another art form (see elective options).
  • Performance skills class is held daily. In this class you will cover practical topics and participate in interactive discussion enhanced through master classes and chamber ensemble sessions.

When you're not in class, you will have numerous opportunities to enjoy presentations in music, theatre, visual art, film, creative writing, and dance.

Each session of this program is three weeks long, and students are welcome to attend two three-week sessions. A multiple session discount is offered.

Performance Venues and Opportunities

Performance venues include the 3,900-seat Kresge Auditorium, the 950-seat Corson Auditorium, the open-air historic Interlochen Bowl, and the beautiful Dendrinos Chapel and Recital Hall. Kresge Auditorium was recently named one of the ten best outdoor performance venues in the nation by USA Today.

Students may compete for the opportunity to perform a concerto with one of the intermediate division's orchestras or wind symphony. Learn more about the concerto competition.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of the artistic diversity here at Interlochen, and enjoy presentations in theatre, music, dance, visual art, creative writing, and film. And each summer, we present an impressive lineup of world-renowned classical, jazz, and popular guest artists.

Audition Requirements

  • Audio or video files #1 and #2: Two solo works of contrasting style. There is no required repertoire for intermediate applicants, however the audition recording should demonstrate both technical and lyrical playing. Piano accompaniment is preferred, but not required. Percussionists should demonstrate their skills on snare drum, mallet instruments and timpani.
