High School Horn Institute

The horn institute provides an opportunity for students in grades 9-12 to spend a week of intensive study with a distinguished faculty of performers and teachers.

Daily master classes focus on practice techniques and routines, instrument history, solo literature, professionalism and ethics of the music business.

Etude studies include the Kopprasch Etudes, Maxime-Alphonse Etudes, Concone Etudes, etc.

Private lessons give students personal instruction from the distinguished faculty.

Rehearsals for small and large ensembles occur daily.

Performances by faculty members and distinguished artists are among the highlights of the week.

Audition Requirements

Video or audio files #1 and #2: Two solo works of contrasting style.

Additional Opportunities

Students interested in a multi-week, ensemble-based program are invited to also apply to the high school summer orchestra and wind symphony program, which begins immediately following this one-week institute.

Interlochen is also home to the Arts Academy boarding high school, which offers a horn major for grades 9-12, as well as a post-graduate year.
