An alumnus of both Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp, Instructor of Music Theory Laurence Smith studied voice, organ and harp throughout high school and college. Graduate studies included work with choral conductors Paul Christensen and Stephen Cleobury. He was a member and soloist with church, semi-professional and professional vocal ensembles in the Detroit metropolitan area.
Prior to a full-time appointment at the academy in the fall of 1999, Mr. Smith served in several part-time capacities at the academy including accompanist, guest instructor of organ and conductor of the Academy Chamber Singers. He was the director of music and church administration of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City from 1980-1999. He also served as vocal and choral consultant to the Northwest Lower Michigan Synod of the Evangelical Church of America and as coach and accompanist for many professional musicians in the Grand Traverse area.
He served on the faculty of the Interlochen Arts Camp as instructor of organ and conductor of the high school choirs for 26 summers.
