Emily Umbarger

Academic and College Counselor, Interlochen Arts Academy

M. A, Education, Curriculum, & Instruction from Michigan State University & Converse College; B.A, Elementary Education from Michigan State University

Emily is a native of Northern Michigan, having been born and raised in the area. She enjoyed the first year of her teaching career in Traverse City Area Public Schools. Spending the next several years teaching in both Florida and South Carolina, she taught History, English, and Reading and worked as a Literacy Coach in the public school system. Earning her Master's degree in Education with an endorsement in Gifted and Talented Education, Emily treasured the years she spent teaching.

Prior to joining the Academic and College Counseling department as a full time counselor in 2010, Emily attended Michigan State University where she pursued doctoral studies in Education, Curriculum, and Technology. She taught teaching methodology courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at MSU for two years in the Department of Teacher Education.

Emily is a proud wife and mother and enjoys spending time with her family on their 13-acre homestead farm. Outside of work, she can most often be seen tending her garden or in the pastures training their animals. She is an Irish whistle player and actively involved in an educational French Colonial historical group. Equally passionate about the arts, Emily is feeling at home at Interlochen Arts Academy, where the arts and education come alive.
