Longtime Camp faculty member and revered music educator, Cassel Grubb, passed away on January 1, 2012. An accomplished cellist, Cassel taught generations of Interlochen campers from 1963 to 2004. He served as director of the Camp’s string ensemble program for fifteen years and co-directed the adult chamber music camp for ten years.

In the 2011-12 Academy year, Katherine Kilburn became the first female to hold the position of conductor with the Arts Academy Band. Kilburn shares her thoughts about her new role in this story, originally printed in "Grand Traverse Woman" magazine.

Academy junior Leah Mattfield has been selected as the musical theatre/acting winner of Arts Schools Network’s student talent competition.

This January, twelve students and two faculty members completed a nearly 20,000-mile trip from Interlochen to Singapore, where they visited the School of the Arts (SOTA). The students represented a cross section of arts majors from the Academy and participated in a wide variety of classes covering Comedia del Arte, Indian music, Gamelan music and Noh dance.

Maya Samuels, a comparative arts major at the Arts Academy, was one of only 24 students in the world who attended the Nobel Prize Ceremony as part of the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar (SIYSS).

Eleven submissions have been selected for the first Interlochen Arts Academy One-Act Festival. The theatre department will produce a showcase of ten-minute plays highlighting the creative work submitted by Interlochen alumni, faculty and student playwrights.

The third annual Future of Cinema Fest was held on the Interlochen campus this fall and screened the best work of high school students around the world. In addition to screening student films, the festival brings some of the world’s leading filmmakers to the Interlochen campus where they work closely with students who also have a passion for storytelling and film.

Jim and Mary Tolley have so many Interlochen stories to tell that it’s hard to know where to begin. Wherever you start, what soon becomes obvious is that the Tolleys’ long-standing relationship with Interlochen is based on both give and take: they’ve received much from Interlochen over the years, and they’ve spent the past three decades giving back.

In the fall of 2011, the Interlochen campus welcomed six students and two faculty members from the Shanghai Conservatory Middle School. Plans are underway to send a small group of Interlochen students and faculty on a similar trip to Shanghai in the near future.

Interlochen Arts Academy officially kicks off its yearlong celebration with a performance of the Academy orchestra joined by guest artist and Academy alumnus Kevin Cobb (class of 1989). The performance is scheduled for January 20, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. For those who cannot attend the live performance, it will also be available by live webcast.
