June 2008: Academy Pianist Wins Second Prize at National Competition
Interlochen Arts Academy piano student Paige Chun Li won second prize at the 2008 National Biennial Piano Arts Competition in Milwaukee.
Li was chosen as one of 10 semi-finalists from a video audition and was one of three students invited to the final round where she played Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
She also won the Audience Communication Prize at the competition, her first in the United States.
Li, 18, is from Shanghai, China, and studies piano with T.J. Lymenstull at Interlochen Arts Academy. She is the daughter of Li Yong and Pan Zhi Yu.
The middle school program that Li once attended is closely affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. This spring, Interlochen President Jeffery Kimpton traveled to Shanghai to further develop a growing relationship with Shanghai Conservatory, one of China’s leading arts institutions.
Two other finalists in the competition also have ties to Interlochen—Yi An Pan is a sophomore who also studies with Lymenstull at the Arts Academy and Amy Lauters is a 2007 graduate of the Arts Academy.
