Job Title: Recreation/Challenge Course Assistant
Reports to: Recreation Manager
Position Purpose: The Recreation/Challenge Course Assistant functions as a Challenge Course facilitator, archery monitor, and Arts & Crafts class instructor for Junior and Intermediate level classes. S/he will also be regularly responsible for work in the recreation department, such as tracking and maintaining equipment, organizing paperwork, and assisting with recreation programming in the camp divisions.
Essential Job Functions: The Recreation/Challenge Course Assistant works daily as a Challenge Course facilitator for groups including campers and/or staff. This includes course inspections and maintenance, and required program and equipment documentation. Recreation Assistants will also be teaching the Junior & Intermediate Crafts classes on a regular basis. (Crafts classes are part of the Recreation Department, NOT the Visual Art department.) This will include traditional camp crafts and simple projects appropriate to the students’ grade level. S/he will also contribute to administrative responsibilities in the recreation department, and recreation programming in the camp divisions.
Other Job Duties: Additional duties include, but are not limited to: tracking and maintaining equipment, organizing paperwork, and assisting with recreation programming in the camp divisions. Recreation staff members sometimes assist with divisional coverage responsibilities as defined by the Coordinator of Leisure Arts or the Deans of Students.
Equipment Used: Challenge course equipment, including seat harness, full-body harness, helmet, ropes, standard belay devices, and course hardware. Various outdoor recreation equipment, including tents and outdoor cooking equipment. Various athletic equipment for sports such as soccer, softball, basketball, ultimate Frisbee, archery, etc. Various equipment for simple camp crafts, including beading, paper crafts, friendship bracelets, rexlace projects, candle-making, etc. Recreation staff need also demonstrate professional phone etiquette and basic computer literacy, including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and email.
Qualifications: Recreation/Challenge Course Assistant must be at least 18 years of age and must pass Challenge Course Facilitator: Level I training provided on-site. Recreation/athletic experience is preferred; Red Cross First Aid and CPR certifications are recommended.
Compensation: $1150, includes room and board
