Job Title: Kiln Technicians
Reports to: Director of Visual Arts
Position Purpose: The Kiln Technician position is designed to manage kiln operations and assist the ceramics and sculpture studios from a technical standpoint. The kiln technicians provide vital support to two busy ceramics studios and manage the work-flow of those studios. Kiln Technicians also have the opportunity to produce and show personal work as well as working along side a dedicated and experienced faculty.
Essential Job Functions: Duties include: studio preparation and set-up, loading, unloading and firing kilns in coordination with the demands of the ceramics and sculpture studios, mix clay for classes, manage clay storage, inventory supplies, and studio clean up. Kiln technicians work an average of 8 hours per day but schedules are often adjusted to accommodate the busy programs and the various firing schedules assigned.
Other Job Duties: The Kiln Technicians may also assist with classes in the ceramics and sculpture studios and will assist with the department's public and community programs as appropriate including open studio nights, extracurricular activities and Collage.
Equipment Used: Gas and electric kilns, clay mixers, pug mill, arc welders, plasma cutter, oxy-acetylene set-ups, various hand tools and a variety of woodshop tools and equipment.
Qualifications: A strong background in ceramics is required and applicants will be required to verify their knowledge of operating kilns and the technical aspects of the medium.
Compensation: Salary $1,650 including room and board
